Alyson Ainsworth Wire Waffle

WIRE WAFFLE, 2008

Handwoven electrical wire, vinyl cord, metal wire, 69” x 30”

This amplified waffle weave uses extreme materials—electrical wire and vinyl cable, to achieve its massive scale. Being too rigid to wrap around a loom’s front beam, this piece required some inventiveness to weave. The warp was stretched between two consecutive looms, using the harnesses and back beam of one and the front beam of another. All weaving happened in suspension between the two looms. This piece became a study of how exaggerated a traditional weave structure could become using unconventional materials.
